Mind Over Movement

Senior BFA Thesis

“How might we use design to highlight the benefits of dance while addressing the challenges and pressures adolescents face in the competitive dance world?”

For my final project at the UofA, I chose to study competitive dance because it has played such an influential role in my upbringing. I have continued to work at my childhood studio throughout my young adult life, and I love watching the little dancers grow up to be talented, passionate, and intelligent humans.

I decided to curate an interactive workbook for competitive dancers to maintain schedules, start conversation, and receive tips and tricks on how to better navigate competitive dancing.

Through my extensive research, I noticed 4 common themes:

I used these themes to organize the workbook into sections for the dancer to focus on. Each section included 20 days of quick prompts to direct their attention to their mental ad physical well-being.
